On a Foothill Driveway, Balance Is Everything

Glendale loses power more often than the flatland cities do, and a garage door is the one part of a house that becomes genuinely inconvenient the moment the electricity stops.

Power and Safety

When the Electricity Stops

When the power goes out, an ordinary opener stops. The manual release will let you lift the door by hand, but on a heavy door at the bottom of a foothill driveway that is a real job, and it has to be re-engaged correctly afterwards or the door will not run properly. An opener with an integrated battery backup keeps working through an outage, which is why we fit a lot of them on this side of the city.

The other job worth doing while a technician is on site is the safety reverse test. A garage door is required to stop and reverse when something obstructs it, and on a sloped driveway a door that fails that test is more dangerous than it would be on level ground because gravity is already working against you. It takes two minutes to check and it is the single most important safety feature on the door.

Questions

Glendale Safety Questions

Is a battery backup opener worth it here?

On a foothill Glendale property, generally yes. Outages are more frequent up here, and a backup unit keeps the door working through one rather than leaving you lifting a heavy door on a slope by hand. California now requires battery backup on newly installed residential openers, so a replacement unit will include it anyway.

How do I test the safety reverse myself?

Lay a solid object, a length of timber works well, flat on the floor in the middle of the opening, then close the door with the opener. It should touch the object and reverse immediately. If it keeps pushing, stops without reversing, or hesitates, the force settings need adjustment and the door should not be used around children or pets until it is fixed.

I pulled the emergency release. How do I put it back?

With the door fully closed, pull the release cord toward the door to re-engage the lever, then run the opener once. The trolley should reconnect with an audible click as it passes. If it does not catch, or the door then runs unevenly, stop and call rather than forcing it.
